After the gray and cold of the winter season, the summer sunshine is a welcome relief. Unfortunately, harsh ultraviolet rays can have a negative impact on your eyes. The encouraging news is you can protect your vision and still enjoy the outdoors. Here are several tips eye doctors suggest following when the temperature cranks up.

How to Protect Your Eyes During the Summer

1. Wear Swim Goggles

Eye doctors recommend thoroughly washing the goggles after each use with warm soapy water, followed by a good rinse and air-dry.

2. Invest in UV Sunglasses

The summer season brings on stronger ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can put your eyes at risk of exposure. As added protection, buy a pair of sunglasses with at least 100% UV protection. The lenses are designed to block out the rays and shield your eyes, cornea, and retina from UV exposure.

3. Remove Contacts Before Swimming

Contact lens wearers know how important it is to keep their lenses clean and disinfected. If you plan to go swimming in a pool, lake, or ocean, take the time to remove them first. Eye doctors say this step will help protect your eyes from infection and irritation. Remember to keep up your routine of daily lens removal, cleansing, and weekly disinfection treatments.

4. Shield Eyes During Outdoor Chores

Summer is the ideal time to get out and do projects around the house. From mowing the grass to do-it-yourself tasks, your eyes are vulnerable to debris and chemical exposure. Protect them by wearing a face shield or goggles. People who experience allergies should take extra care against eye irritation by staying away from pollen environments and other areas that can trigger discomfort.
