Bugs make a lot of people squeamish. According to pest control experts, spiders and cockroaches receive a lot of votes as the most unpopular. However, are they the worst insects to share a house with? Below is a list of some objectively nasty bugs that you don't want anywhere near your home.

What Pests Are the Worst to Have on Your Property?

1. Termites

Termites swarm in spring, seeking to start new colonies. They look for moist, undisturbed areas where they can start devouring wood for its cellulose content. They damage about 600,000 U.S. homes each year, costing hundreds to thousands of dollars in treatment and repairs.

2. Carpenter Ants

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat the wood they come into contact with, nesting in it instead. However, this still causes a great deal of damage from their burrowing. They are not as voracious as termites, and their work may take years to result in serious damage. Nevertheless, if you spot signs of carpenter ant activity—piles of sawdust or wood shavings, holes in the wood of your home, or rustling noises from behind walls—contact a pest control professional immediately.

3. Bedbugs

They are not known to transmit diseases, but they can cause allergic reactions, including itching, sneezing, and even anaphylactic shock. They hide in the folds of sheets, the seams of mattresses, pillows, furniture, and any out-of-the-way spot they can find. This makes them extremely difficult to get rid of. In many instances, treatment requires tenting and fumigating the whole house. Bed bugs are flat, gray or brown, and turn bright red after feeding.

4. Brown Recluse Spider

The bite of a brown recluse spider is venomous. It only rarely causes death in humans, but it can result in skin lesions, fever, chills, nausea, deep ulceration at the bite site, and even seizures and coma. The spider is brown or tan with a violin-shaped mark on its back. The body diameter runs from about 1/4 to 3/4-inches, with long legs that may double its size.
