During a Southern summer, you rely on your air conditioning system nearly 24/7 to provide respite from the heat. Unfortunately, this can result in higher-than-usual utility bills. Provided you don’t require AC repair for a malfunctioning system, however, there are a few things you can do to improve your air conditioner’s efficiency and cut cooling costs without spending a dime.

4 Steps to Increase AC Efficiency

1. Keep It Clean

Most HVAC maintenance should be left to AC repair professionals, but there are a few tasks you can tackle yourself. This includes cleaning the unit. Start by cleaning or replacing the AC air filter. In most homes, it should be cleaned each month and replaced every 90 days, or once a season. Also, keep the outdoor unit clean and free of debris and dirt.

2. Draw the Blinds

Direct sunlight creates a greenhouse effect, meaning the temperature in your home rises, causing your air conditioner to work harder. Blocking sunlight is an easy way to improve air conditioner efficiency. Draw the blinds and shades during the day, particularly in peak sun hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you leave early in the morning, draw the window coverings before you go.

3. Adjust the Thermostat

Bumping the thermostat by just a couple of degrees can significantly reduce energy costs. If you have the programmable type, you can even set it to adjust the temperature automatically based on your schedule. Otherwise, turn the temperature up a few degrees before leaving in the morning. Most AC repair experts recommend keeping the temperature at 78 degrees when you’re in and 82 when you’re out.

4. Keep the Heat Out of the Kitchen

AC repairThe kitchen is the most significant heat-producing room in most households. Using the oven can heat up the entire house, making the air conditioner cycle more to keep up. On exceptionally hot days, avoid using the oven as much as possible and cook outside on the grill, make cold dishes such as sandwiches and salads, or treat yourself to takeout.
