If you have been experiencing pregnancy symptoms and are ready to confirm them, there are options available to you. Two types of pregnancy tests, using urine or blood, confirm pregnancy. Either will detect if human chorionic OB-GYNgonadotropin (hCG) is present, a hormone that only exists if you are pregnant. To confirm a pregnancy, schedule an appointment with your local OB-GYN.

Urine Tests

Home Pregnancy Tests

It is common for women to take their first pregnancy test at home, before visiting the OB-GYN. Most women make this choice due to the privacy they have in their own home. Home pregnancy tests can be taken as soon as you have missed your period. However, a follow-up test a week after is recommended for the most accurate results.

Clinical Pregnancy Tests

A clinical urine test is similar to the at-home test. The difference is that your gynecologist will assist you when taking the test. While potentially more accurate, this test can cost more than the at-home option.

Blood Tests

Quantitative Blood Test

Depending on how much information you are trying to obtain, a quantitative test may be an option for you. It detects the amount of hCG in your blood. This is helpful information for future appointments and can help determine both you and your baby’s health during pregnancy.

Qualitative Blood Test

A qualitative test is more to the point, providing a positive or negative result similar to the urine test. The benefit of doing a blood test, however, is that it is normally more accurate than a urine sample and can confirm a pregnancy earlier. It will take longer to receive blood test results than at-home tests.
