If you’ve decided to propose to your significant other while on vacation, you might wonder how to travel with the engagement ring safely. The last thing you want is for a gorgeous and expensive piece of jewelry to get lost, stolen, or confiscated while in transit. Below, find tips on how to get an engagement ring to your destination without any problems.

How to Travel With an Engagement Ring

engagement rings1. Pack It Carefully

Your jeweler will likely provide you with a ring box that has adequate cushioning to protect the engagement band. However, since this box is small and easy to misplace, it’s a good idea to pack it into a specialized, secure compartment. You can also place the box in a larger item in your carry-on bag, such as a dress shoe or pant pocket. Try to avoid putting the ring in your checked bag. This will eliminate the possibility of it being stolen, damaged, or lost throughout the travel process.

2. Prepare for Airport Security

If you have the engagement ring in your pocket in the airport, it’ll likely set off security alarms, which could delay your trip. If you want to keep the ring close to you at all times, keep it in your pocket, but slip it into your carry-on bag before putting it through security. Afterward, put it right back in your pocket. This will also maintain discretion if your partner is not yet aware of the upcoming proposal.

3. Find a Good Place to Store It

Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll want to keep the ring in a safe place until you need it. You’ll want it to be somewhere where your future spouse won’t see it. If the hotel room safe is too obvious, ask the concierge if you can keep it in the main safe behind the counter.

4. Prevent Misplacement

If you’re concerned about losing the ring between the hotel room and the proposal site, attach it to the inside of your pant or shirt pocket with a safety pin. Alternatively, wear it on a chain or put it in a sunglasses case.
