Getting a new car is an exciting experience. But if you expect to get years of reliable service from your newly purchased vehicle, you have to treat it well. New car owners often forget to seek out vehicle maintenance care from a qualified auto mechanic. In doing so, you will see fewer breakdowns and lower the cost of auto repairs down the line. Below are the do’s and don'ts of basic auto maintenance.

Do:

Change the oil frequently.

auto mechanic Engine oil lubricates the engine's moving parts and helps dissipate heat. It will not perform if it is old, sticky, or worn out. Most manufacturers recommend you change the oil every 5,000 miles. Older vehicles with 100,000 plus miles need the oil changed about every 3,000 miles. Oil breaks down over time, so don't wait more than about six months before having an auto mechanic change it, even if you haven't yet reached the recommended mileage.

Check the tire pressure.

Tires that are over or under-inflated wear out more quickly, and under-inflated tires reduce fuel economy. You should check the tire pressure at every fuel stop and look for the recommended tire pressure on your front door or in the car’s manual. If you feel your pressure is too low, visit your auto mechanic for an inspection and fill.

Don't:

Buy into a lifetime transmission fluid.

Some manufacturers claim they make transmission fluids that never need replacing. Any reputable auto mechanic will tell you this is not true. As with engine oil, transmission oil lubricates components and reduces heat. It can collect moisture and dirt and should be changed every 70,000 to 100,000 miles.

Forget about the exterior.

To keep your vehicle looking its best, wash it frequently to remove grime, bird droppings, tree sap, and other contaminants that could wear out the paint. Park the car in a garage and wax it twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Keep the windshield clean to provide the clearest view of the road, and make sure you refill the washer fluid reservoir regularly.
