Gardening is a rewarding pastime, which is why many enjoy growing their green thumbs. Whether you’re looking to cultivate some potted plants on your patio or start a large vegetable garden, you’ll find the task much easier with the right gardening supplies. Start with the basic “toolbox” below.

Basic Must-Have Gardening Supplies

1. Gloves

Gloves do much more than keep you from getting dirt under your nails. They’ll protect you from insects, thorns, and other harmful risks. Find durable, water-resistant gloves that aren’t too bulky or hot on your hands. Since you’ll be wearing these often, you want them to fit well.

2. Hand Trowel

A wider blade is good for moving soil and planting containers, while a thin blade is best for weeding and using in rocky soil.

3. Pruners

Handheld pruners are good for cutting back dead growth and pruning plants such as shrubs, fruit trees, or perennials. Look for a sharp pair that will make for easy, clean cuts.

4. Garden Hose

Your plants will need plenty of water to thrive, and using a watering can just isn’t practical. Buy a rubber garden hose that’s long enough to reach all of your plants from your spigot. Get an adjustable nozzle for it so you can control water pressure and the radius of the spray.

5. Garden Fork

A garden fork is used to turn soil, preparing it for planting. Choose your fork depending on your soil type. If you’ll be digging in compacted or claylike soil, straight tines are best. If you’ll mainly be working with mulch or compost, find tines with a curve.
