While most people think of winter as the most dangerous time to be on the road, summer has its own challenges. For one, the heat can alter the pressure in your tires—causing them to blow more easily. But regardless of the season, a sharp object like a nail or other road debris can also leave yours compromised. To avoid having to tow your car to an auto maintenance shop, consider keeping a spare in the trunk. The guide below explains what kind to get and how to use them.

How Are Spares Different Than Normal Tires?

Spares come in different types. Full-size ones are equivalent to the others on your vehicle—and can be used as a permanent replacement if set onto your old rim. However, since it will not be as worn as the other three, this could negatively affect your driving, jeopardizing your safety and causing your car to require more auto maintenance. Therefore, talk with a mechanic about your options.

Donut spares are a little smaller in diameter than your regular tires to save space in the trunk. They’re also sometimes made of lighter steel. However, these should be switched out for a normal tire as soon as possible—ideally, within 70 miles—to avoid another incident.

What Steps Should You Take After a Blowout?

auto maintenanceIf your tire blows, drive to the nearest shoulder or off-road area available. You’ll want to set up emergency markers to alert others on the road of your situation—these are typically triangular, orange, and reflective. After removing the hub cap and loosening the lug nuts with a wrench, prop the car up with a jack. Unscrew the lug nuts the whole way, remove and switch out the tires, and then secure the lug nuts and hub cap again. Afterward, take the vehicle to an auto maintenance shop to make a decision about replacement tires and to have the vehicle inspected for any additional damages. You should also pick up another spare.
