Losing a parent is never easy; it’s often accompanied by complex emotions and major life changes. In addition to your own grieving, you may start to feel concerned about your newly widowed mother or father. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts on how to care for a parent who has lost a spouse and might need to move to an independent living community.

Do:

Consider their emotions.

independent livingGrieving a lost loved one can be difficult, complicated, and emotionally messy. Many people experience a combination of denial, anger, and depression in response to losing a spouse. Allow your parent to express their feelings to you without judgment, and take their emotions into consideration as you help them make plans for the future.

Look into independent living options.

If your parent has health or mobility issues, the loss of a spouse may make it difficult for them to return to their activities of daily living. It’s a good idea to look into independent living options so that your parent will stay safe and receive the proper care, while continuing to do the activities they love.

Don’t:

Be controlling.

In the wake of a death, try not to be too controlling. Allow your parent the freedom to make their own decisions, but feel free to offer advice in a gentle and loving manner. If you help with errands, household chores, or meal preparation, don’t come across overbearing.

Make them feel rushed.

It’s difficult to make decisions quickly in the days and weeks following a tremendous loss. Give your parent as much time as possible to decide on major tasks, such as selling the house and moving into an independent living community.
