If you suffer from neck or back pain, the thought of a long flight can be stressful. Sitting still for long periods of time on an airplane can definitely aggravate your pain. But your flight doesn’t have to be awful. Follow these simple, chiropractor-recommended guidelines to manage your neck and back pain.

Do:

Bring support pillows.

chiropractorSitting for a while in the cramped, tiny seat of an airplane can very easily lead to bad posture. Laying your head against the window or trying to sleep on the tray table is not only uncomfortable, but it can also be disastrous when you wake up. Invest in a good neck support pillow that wraps around the back of your head to help yourself maintain a good posture, even when you doze off.

Try to relax.

When you are stressed, your body tenses up, aggravating neck and back pain. Plan some relaxing activities to pass the time, like calming music on your headphones or a simple game you like playing. Occasionally, feel out your body’s state; are your legs relaxed? How about your hands or your jaw? Take a few minutes to check the areas you may not even realize you are holding tension in.

Don’t:

Forget to stay hydrated.

The air is drier at higher altitudes and air pressure in the cabin is lower.  The combination can cause you to get dehydrated and lead to feelings of fatigue and weakness.  It’s recommended that you drink 8 ounces of water for every hour that you’re in the air.

Stay still the whole flight.

Of course, stay in your seat until the seatbelt sign is turned off. But as soon as it’s safe, take the opportunity to stand up and walk around a little. Not only will it help your muscles stay loose, but when you sit down again, your body will reset its position, which can help relieve any building tension.
