If you’ve been considering taking action against wrinkles, you’ve probably encountered the terms Botox® and Dysport®. Both are FDA-approved injectables used to smooth away the lines of aging, and though they serve the same purpose, they aren’t the same. Here is a quick overview of their similarities and differences to help you make an informed decision.

Similarities

Composition

They are both FDA-approved neurotoxins, derived from botulinum toxin type A. They are both entirely safe to use in small doses by a trained professional.

Purpose

BotoxThey both work to relax the muscles under the skin to minimize wrinkles by blocking the nerve impulses that control muscle contraction.

This decrease in movement is what helps to diminish wrinkles. Both treatment types are temporary, though one kind may last longer than the other depending upon the individual.

In either case, you’re looking at 3 to 4 months for Dysport. It is around the same for Botox, though it may last up to 6 months.

Differences

One of the most significant differences between them is the areas they affect.

Furrow Lines

Dysport is highly effective at reducing lines between the eyes, also known as frown lines. If you’ve got deep frown lines to address, Dysport may be the way to go.

Crow's Feet

Botox, on the other hand, is great at minimizing crow’s feet as well as shallower frown lines between the eyes.

Protein

What sets the two apart and produces a different result is a small protein difference. Each is manufactured a little differently, and those slight variations impact not only how they work, but how soon and for how long.

Dysport generally renders results faster, but Botox tends to last longer. Neither has been proved to be more effective than the other, but some people may find that one works better for them.
