Pest control is essential when it comes to mice—and these home invaders that can be particularly pesky if they find their way into your kitchen. The rodents can chew through walls, compromise the quality of your food, and expose your household to diseases. Use the following methods to prevent an infestation in your home.

A Guide to Kitchen Pest Control

1. Seal Entry Points

If mice notice a small notch in your home, they may be tempted to chew building materials like insulation, drywall, and wood to use in their nests. This problem grows quickly because most adult mice can squeeze through dime-sized holes. To deter them from entering, fill noticeable gaps with steel wool or copper mesh, then add caulking to keep the wires in place and reinforce the barrier.

2. Conceal Scents

The furry creatures are typically omnivores—meaning they eat both plants and meat—but they’re known to munch on anything from birthday cake to dog food. To keep them from sniffing out a snack, wipe down countertops, appliances, and other kitchen surfaces immediately after cooking. Lock leftovers in sturdy, sealable containers, and avoid leaving excess pet food in open bowls after mealtime.

3. Use Peppermint

If you want to take a natural approach to pest control, try peppermint oil. The minty smell might not divert mice who have already made a home in your walls, but it can stop new critters from joining the mischief. For the best results, soak cotton balls in pure, undiluted peppermint oil and place them near possible entry points, or mix a drop of oil per ounce of water in a spray bottle and spritz hard surfaces while cleaning. However, be mindful that peppermint oil can cause serious side effects like skin irritation in infants and young children and may be harmful to pets.
