Your air conditioning system is one of the most important appliances during the summer months, but it comes at a price. It’s time to get proactive and take measures to reduce your next electric bill. Here are some do’s and don’ts to follow to help you decrease the costs, while the heat continues to increase.

Do:

Use fans instead of your air conditioning system.

Fans at ground level help push warm air up and prevent it from getting stale. Most thermostats have a fan setting, which is usually set to automatic. Set it to the “On” position, so it is running even when the air conditioning is off. This is particularly useful in multileveled homes. The fan moves the air around the entire house, so extra hot rooms will disperse the air throughout the home. This cools the hotter rooms, and cooler areas rotate the cooled air to the warmer areas, forcing the warm air to rise. This motion of rotation cools the house significantly.

Open your windows at night.

Opening two windows on opposite sides of the house creates ventilation. Warmer air is attracted to cooler areas and will move out of your home. If you have the fan running, it will aid in removing the warm air faster.

Don’t:

Forget about preseason maintenance.

Air Conditioning SystemChanging your air filter once every two to three months promotes airflow, and when they get blocked, dust and other particles can get into your home. Blocked filters also make your air conditioning system work harder, which costs more to operate. Have an HVAC contractor perform biannual maintenance to verify the ductwork doesn’t have cracks or leaks and the air conditioner is working at full capacity.

Use devices that produce heat.

Try not to cook indoors; instead, rely on microwaves and barbecuing. Run the dishwasher and dryer early in the morning while the windows are still open. Avoid lights by opening up the curtains early in the day. When the sun starts to peek in, shut the curtains.
