What do I do with my horses (or other large animals) in case of a California Wildfire?

Earthquakes, lighting strikes, electrical fires, mishaps and arsonists alike (not to mention Fourth of July Fireworks) are an ever-present risk to spark forest fires in Southern California. If you are an animal owner who has thought of evacuating your horses (or large animals) here are 7 factors to consider:

1) Chosing a location close to main roads where you can get "in" and "out".  Remote locations, however beautiful, present important factors for safety of getting in/out.

2) Is there good access to evacuate with horse trailers, both small and large horse trailers is you have to evacuate?

3) Where is the nearest fire station?

4) Surroundings:  what is around the location?

5) Does a fire have a clear path to get to the property?

6) Is there clearance around the property?

7) What type of irrigation is on the property and surrounding the property?  Make sure there is enough water pressure from the source.

Where do I take my animals in Southern California when there’s a Wildfire?

Chris Libs, owner of a 25 acre horse boarding property in Oceanside California, says “In case of California Wildfires, the easy access to the main roads and the ease of

getting in/out of the Oceanside Equestrian Center property with large vehicles, access for fire trucks is the biggest reason I purchased this location.” OEC is an ideal location for horse owners to board their horses in case of a wildfire because the land is irrigated and bordered by the Arrowood Golf Course. With hundreds of acres that surround the property, horses and large animals are free and clear from danger because the area is clear of brush and insulated from spreading forest fires. Owners will want a large open area, like Oceanside Equestrian Center because there are large open pastures where horses can be turned out and continue their daily routine safely regardless of the fires.
