Understanding how your vehicle functions and working with a qualified mechanic will allow you to properly maintain your car and identify the early signs of a problem. Plus, with knowledge of various car systems, such as the engine, you’ll be able to intelligently communicate with an auto repair specialist. Here’s what you need to know.

What Are the Main Parts of the Engine?

The main parts of the internal combustion engine are the cylinders, pistons, valves, spark plugs, and crank shaft. The cylinders are the individual chambers where gas is ignited to create force. This force then pushes on the pistons, which are essentially plungers in each cylinder. The pistons move the crank shaft, which transfers the power of the burning gas to the car's wheels and other mechanisms. The valves in each cylinder allow the right mix of gasoline and air into the chamber, while the spark plugs ignite it.

What Does Gasoline Do?

mechanicGas is used to fuel the engine because it's easy to ignite and contains a significant amount of energy per its volume. Gas mixes with air more readily than other fossil fuels, creating a vapor that burns quickly. At the same time, it's easy to deliver it in measured doses for controlled firings that won't damage your engine.

How Does the Four-Stroke Cycle Work?

The movement of the pistons in your engine isn't a simple in and out motion. Instead, each time a cylinder fires, the piston makes four strokes. The first is an outward stroke that expands the chamber and draws in fuel. The second plunges the piston inward to compress the gas. To create the third stroke, the gas is ignited, forcing the piston out and providing the actual power from the cylinder. The fourth stroke resets the piston and pushes the exhaust out. Multiple cylinders that are firing in rhythm each power the strokes of the others. When they get out of sync, a mechanic can prevent the cylinders from working against each other and causing engine damage.
