Lower back pain is common among people of all ages and can severely impact your quality of life. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with this pain each day. Take some proactive measures to relieve your pain; try a few different strategies to see what works for you.

How to Target Lower Back Pain

1. Work Your Core

The muscles in your core — throughout your abdomen and back — support the spine. These must be kept strong to prevent injuries and reduce pain. Start off with simple exercises that will target your core muscles, such as sitting on a Pilates ball rather than your desk chair or holding the plank position.

2. Support Good Posture

Many people exacerbate back pain with poor posture. Slumping or keeping the spine at a strange angle will strain it. Place a back pad or a rolled-up towel behind your lower back when you sit in a chair to push the spine forward. If you spend any time working at a computer, check that your computer monitor is high enough that it’s directly in front of your eyes. Your chair should be adjusted so that your feet sit firmly flat on the floor.

3. Stretch

Get up once every 30 minutes to stretch your legs and your back. You can do this by walking around and twisting your torso to each side. Put your arms over your head to stretch the muscles upward as well.

The most effective way to target your lower back pain is to see a chiropractor.
