Hotter weather means it’s time for RV owners to bring their homes-on-wheels out of storage for weekend getaways, family road trips, and summer camping. While it’s easy to get carried away with trip planning, you need to take a few steps to properly prepare your RV for travel before rolling out. Follow these simple steps to get your mobile home ready for the season.

3 Steps to Take When Bringing Your RV Out of Storage

1. Check for Water Leaks

This is a crucial step if your RV has been parked in an uncovered storage area. Just like in a house or apartment, water leaks are a common problem during the colder, rainier months. First, check the roof for any damage or leaks. If necessary, repair or reseal the roof to stop major leaks. Once you’ve fixed the larger issue, check smaller areas like vents, windows, and air conditioners. If you find any cracks or missing or damaged caulk, fix and replace them. The last thing you want is a late night water leak during your summer trip.

2. Check for Bad Tires

storageMost RV tires will last around five to seven years, depending on how well they are taken care of and how many miles they have traveled. When visiting your RV storage facility, check for brittle tires that can create dangerous driving conditions. Brittle or dry rot tires are easy to spot; their rubber is a dull gray with small cracks on the surface. Once you’ve determined your tires are safe to use, check and maintain proper air pressure. Tires that are underinflated can cause premature wear, as well as contribute to dry rot if you don’t use your RV often.

3. Check the Battery

RV batteries are a common point of ire in the travel home community because if they are not properly maintained, they frequently die. To avoid frustration, you should check the battery at the start of each season. Any corrosion should be cleaned away and all fluid levels checked and refilled. Additionally, you should remove the battery and take it to a professional to test to ensure it will last the entire season. If these steps are taken, batteries will last closer to four to five years rather than one to two for underappreciated tires.
