The transmission is responsible for controlling the power that moves from the engine to the wheels. When something is wrong with it, your vehicle can become unsafe to drive or break down completely. All drivers should know the early signs of trouble, so they can go in for transmission repairs before it’s too late.

When Should You Schedule Transmission Repairs?

1. Warning Light

The transmission dashboard warning light often looks like a gear with an exclamation point in the center of it. This tells you when there is an internal problem such as dangerously hot fluid, gear trouble, or programming issues. This isn’t a light that should be ignored; you’ll want to take it in immediately for diagnosis and transmission repairs.

2. Leaking Fluid

Look for pools of red or brownish fluid underneath your car. If the fluid is brown in color or has visible particles in it, then the transmission likely needs to be replaced due to old age.

3. Burning Smell

When transmission fluid burns, it releases a strangely sweet smell. This may come through your vents, or you may smell it when you step outside of the car. It often burns when the transmission is overheating, so your mechanic will need to determine why the transmission was overheating and repair it.

4. Slipping Gears

“Slipping” is a term used to describe when your transmission moves between gears when it shouldn’t. Common signs your transmission is slipping include rotations per minute over 3,500, difficulty shifting gears, noises when you shift gears, or delays in acceleration. Fluid leaks, worn gears, or clutch problems are common issues behind this symptom.
