There are many benefits to having window treatments. They provide privacy, protection from the sun, and add character to any home. The challenge is keeping the treatments clean. Here are a few tips for maintaining these home add-ons.

5 Types of Window Treatments

1. Wood Blinds

Wood BlindsWoods blinds should be dusted using a vacuum or a wool duster regularly. When it's time to deep clean, use a wood cleaner.  Don’t use soap and water on these blinds.

2.  Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds can be cleaned using a vacuum brush attachment, or a wool duster.  You can also make a cleaning tool by putting a cellulose sponge in the ends of tongs and gluing the pieces in place. Consider placing a tarp on your floor to catch any dirt before you start cleaning.

3. Vinyl or Metal Blinds

Use an ammonia and water mixture to clean this type of window treatment. Dip cotton gloves or a cotton cloth into the mixture and run it across both the top and the bottom of the blinds. Deep cleaning this type of blind can be a little trickier. It's best to take the blinds off the window and set outside or in a tub and wash with an ammonia mixture, hot water, and a sponge. Also, make sure to rinse off the blinds with clean water.

4. Drapes & Curtains

Shake your drapes or curtains every day. This will remove dust and prevent residue from getting into the fibers of the cloth. Each month, vacuum the cloth with a soft brush attachment, making sure to wash plain drapes or drapes with simple decorations. Of course, check the tags to see if they're washable and only use mild detergent and a gentle wash cycle. To dry, use either the tumble, low, or line dry settings. If they need pressed, do so on the inside of the drapes or curtains.

5. Paper or Parchment Shades

These window treatments can be tricky to clean. You should always hand clean this type. Brush dust off regularly with a clean feather duster or paintbrush. Don’t dust with dusting spray or liquid cleaner.
