Did you know that your driving habits have an impact on how frequently your car or truck needs auto repair? Even seemingly innocuous tendencies, such as resting your hand on the gear shift, can have a long-term effect on vehicle performance. Here are four little driving mistakes to avoid.

Which Driving Habits Will Damage My Vehicle?

1. Not Using Your Parking Brake

The parking pawl is a small component that locks the transmission. When you don’t use your parking brake, the total weight of the engine rests on this small part. Use your parking brake to limit damage to the parking pawl. Even on a level surface, always engage the parking brake to keep excess pressure off the pawl.

2. Revving a Cold Engine

After you start your car, refrain from revving the engine. It takes a while for oil to circulate through a cold engine, and changes in temperature stress the engine. On extremely cold days, wait a minute or two before putting your car into drive.

3. Not Filling Up

Driving around on a low or empty tank can damage the fuel pump. A submerged fuel pump stays cool, and fuel pumps that stay cool last longer than those that don’t. Empty tanks also let dirt and grit make their way from the bottom of the tank into the pump.

4. Excessive Braking

Don’t follow the driver in front of you too closely to avoid having to break too often, and try not to ride your brakes when going down steep hills.
