Boxing improves hand-eye coordination, physical strength, endurance, and mental agility. When you’re ready to reap these and other benefits of the sport, you’ll need to purchase gear. Here are a handful of items that will help you train and protect you from injury.

4 Essential Pieces of Boxing Gear

1. Gloves

You’ll need a dependable pair of boxing gloves to protect your hands from the impact of punches. It’s a good idea to purchase two sets of gloves: a sturdier pair for punching bags and a lighter pair for mitt work and live sparring. Use a size guide to determine which gloves will provide you with punching force without weighing you down. For instance, a person who weighs between 147 to 175 pounds will usually do best with 14-ounce gloves.

2. Heavy Bag

boxingFor practice at home, invest in a heavy bag, especially if you’re a beginner who may not be ready to drill with an opponent. The heavier the bag, the better, since its weight will help you build strength in your punches and prevent the bag from swinging too much. Invest in a stand as well that will allow you to hang the bag anywhere in your home.

3. Mouthguard

It’s common for beginners to throw inaccurate punches, which is why you need a mouthguard to protect your teeth, gums, and tongue during drills and matches. At a local sporting goods store, look for a double-sided mouthguard that will cover your upper and lower teeth. Also, get a case to keep it clean and easy to track.

4. Body Protector

Body protectors cover your chest, abdomen, and sides to absorb the impact of punches and prevent injuries to your internal organs. The protector should provide full coverage of these areas without being so bulky that it weighs you down. Though you won’t wear one during matches, as a beginner, you should wear it during training and practice sessions.
