When your pet has surgery, it’s up to you to take care of them and help them recover. Your veterinarian will give you specific details on what to do after pet surgery, but here are some general do’s and don'ts to follow as well.

Do:

Confine your pet.

Many pet owners are lenient about this instruction, thinking that keeping their pet indoors post-surgery counts as confinement. However, pets can still run and jump around the house. After pet surgery, keep them confined to an area appropriate for their size. Only let them out for leashed walks to use the bathroom for as long as your vet recommends, usually seven to 10 days. Make the area as comfortable as possible with extra blankets or cushions. To prevent boredom, engage them with puzzle feeders, work on training basics, and provide plenty of extra attention and cuddles.

Be vigilant.

veterinarianBecause most pet surgery doesn’t require bandaging, you’ll be able to see if there are signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, oozing, or warm areas. You won’t need to treat the incision, but if it becomes dirty or crusted, gently clean it with a warm washcloth. If you see trouble, call your veterinarian.

Don’t:

Let your pet lick the incision.

Your pet’s natural inclination is to clean the wound by licking it, but that can slow healing. If your veterinarian provides a plastic collar, use it, even if your pet dislikes it. Keeping your pet in the cone for the recommended time will help the incision heal quickly.

Feed too many treats.

You might want to spoil your best friend by offering treats and favorite foods. Depending on the type of surgery, though, your pet may need to be on a restricted or special diet, at least temporarily. Follow your vet’s feeding instructions, and avoid overfeeding or giving too many treats that can cause stomach upset.
