Leather boots only get better with time, and with proper care, they can last forever. Whether they’re cowboy boots or everyday wear, you’ll need to treat them from time to time. This ensures they remain protected against the elements, comfortable, and attractive over the years.

Leather Boot Care Advice

1. Moisturize

Leather boots are made of hide, which needs moisture to stay supple. Place a dollop of leather conditioner into a soft cloth and rub it in a circular motion across all surfaces. This sustains and improves durability, keeping footwear shiny. Then, gently buff the leather with a cloth and let it air dry. Aim to condition every 6 months if you’re in a humid climate or every 3-4 months in a dry environment.

2. Pay Attention to the Soles

cowboy bootsCowboy boots take a beating day in and day out. When the soles begin to wear, the life span of your boots will dwindle. If the heels loosen, crack, or tear, repair them right away before moisture can damage the sensitive interior of the boot. To preserve leather soles, have a shoe repair put on half-soles when the original soles become ‘soft’ and before you wear a hole in them. You may decide to invest in rubber half-soles that you can install on top of the existing surface to extend the life over leather ones. Many shoe repair shops can handle this service. This also helps keep cowboy boots comfortable and absorbs shocks that would otherwise damage the heels and arches. Rubber soled boots will have a much longer life but may eventually need new half or full soles, too.

3. Keep Them Clean

You can apply waterproof treatments to your cowboy boots, but you’ll ultimately need to keep up with such care. Wipe boots down every day with a dust rag to remove dirt and debris, and reseal them as needed. Natural preservatives with Beeswax and Propolis offer great heavy duty water and stain protection   If you have salt or snow stains, apply a remover before they have time to set in. Should any areas tear or become worn, have professionals repair them, and never put dirty socks or bare feet inside.
