A well-maintained shower enclosure enhances any bathroom. Water-stained shower doors and enclosures, on the other hand, make a bathroom look old and shabby. Whether you have a frameless or a framed shower enclosure, it’s important to know how to properly clean it to make it as clear, shiny, and pristine as it was the day the enclosure was installed. Follow these tips for cleaning three different types of shower doors.

Cleaning Strategies for Glass Shower Doors

Frameless Enclosed Shower Doors

Because it has fewer metal parts, a frameless shower enclosure can be easier to maintain than a framed one. To keep the clarity of the glass, it’s a good practice to run a squeegee over it after every shower. Doing so helps prevent water stains that could be challenging to get off over time. Every week or two, use a spray cleaner and wipe down the enclosure to keep it free of stains and streaks.

Framed Shower Door

shower-doorsMost framed enclosures are made of aluminum; they may also have pivot hinges. These frames can collect hard water spots, dirt, and soap scum, which make it difficult to open and close the door over time. Clean a framed shower door by using a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. Spray the mixture onto the aluminum parts of the enclosure and wipe with a cloth. Restore shine by applying a thin layer of car wax and finishing off with a buff.

Sliding Shower Door

Sliding shower doors can be framed or frameless. Unlike the varieties mentioned above, their tracks make them a bit trickier to clean. A sliding shower door comes with four tracks — two for each of its two doors. With regular use, water and soap residue build up in the tracks, harboring germs and making the doors harder to slide. To clean these doors, place vinegar-soaked cotton balls on the tracks and let them sit for five minutes. Next, scrub the tracks gently with an old toothbrush. Rinse with water and wipe dry with a cloth.
