Air conditioner filters have a tough job. They filter out dust, debris, and pet hair, and, in return, give you cool, clean air. To fill your house with clean air, you need the right kind of air filter. Temporary filters are thrown away when they’re used, but reusable air filters can last for many years as long as you take care of them properly. Many people don’t realize their AC filter can, and should, be washed regularly. Before you schedule AC repair, follow the do’s and don’ts of air filter maintenance.

Do:

Use the appropriate tools.

You will need the following: a screwdriver to remove the vent, a handheld vacuum cleaner to clean the filter, and a hair dryer with a cool setting to clear out any excess debris. Simply remove the filter, vacuum the dust and debris on it, and then run it under water for a deep clean. Use a cool hair dryer to thoroughly dry the filter before putting it back.

Replace damaged or worn out filters.

AC repairBuildup on your air conditioner filter is not only bad for your air quality, but it’s also detrimental to the overall health of your AC. Dust, gunk, and pet hair can all clog the filter, restricting how much cool air it can circulate through your home. This buildup causes your AC to work harder, which can limit the life span of the unit.

Don’t:

Wait too long to clean filters.

Check the air conditioner filter at least once a month to make sure it is clean and working properly. Dirty filters that are left sitting for a long time can develop mold and mildew, making them harder to clean—and they may need AC repair if the buildup is bad enough.

Leave the AC unit on while cleaning.

The AC filter keeps dirt and debris from entering the unit. If the AC is left running while you are cleaning the air filter, that means nothing is being filtered out. Pet hair and other dander can enter the unit and cause burnout and damage. To avoid the need for AC repair,  turn off the AC unit while you are cleaning the filter. Only turn the unit back on once the filter is back in place.
