In a season otherwise popular for its warm, sunny days and fun activities, summer does have one downside: the mosquitoes. Whether they are causing painful bites or simply buzzing around and being bothersome, you want to avoid any encounters. To keep them away, it’s helpful to know what attracts and repels them. As such, below are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Do:

Use citronella or a spray.

Known for driving away insects of all kinds, citronella can be found in the form of candles or TIKI torches®. They also contribute to a festive party atmosphere. Fortunately, citronella is found in many other repellents as well. Good old-fashioned sprays can also help ward off mosquitoes. There are even organic and odorless options available.

Keep repellents on your person and skin.

You can rub an odorless balm or wipes onto your skin. Many are made from natural ingredients. If you’d prefer to keep your skin free of products, you could use a battery-operated clip-on fan that emits an odorless repellent while keeping you cool.

Hire a pest control service.

Over-the-counter repellents are not foolproof ways of getting rid of mosquitoes. To increase your chances of eliminating them from your summer, have a residential pest control service visit with their stronger chemicals, powerful equipment, and industry expertise.

Don’t:

Let grass or other plants grow too much.

mosquitoesThe more greenery you have, the more mosquitoes might hang around, as they love the coolness and dampness of plants. Make sure everything stays trimmed to be less appealing to insects.

Keep plant debris in the yard.

On top of the fact that their texture and temperature are pleasant to mosquitoes, piles of leaves and other discarded plants may become their nesting grounds. Clean up the yard regularly to avoid any pest issues.

Leave standing water anywhere.

Water is essential to the mosquitoes’ reproductive process; it’s another possible breeding ground. Even something as small as a water bottle can draw in mosquitoes if there’s no lid on it.
