If you’ve ever wanted to show up at a pool hall for the first time and impress everyone in the room, you’re not alone. Becoming a “pool shark” is a cinematic dream for many people and a true compliment and testament to your skill. However, like most things in life, it’s something you have to work toward. If you want to get to this level, here’s what you need to do.

How to Improve Your Pool-Playing Skills

1. Show Up at the Pool Hall

As hinted at above, you need to put in the hours and practice. If you’re a beginner, the first thing to do is just shoot the ball across the table. Experiment with different angles and amounts of force to see how the ball responds and moves around.

2. Loosen Your Grip

pool hallHaving too tight a grip on the cue stick is a common mistake for beginners. Many people think that it gives them more control, but the opposite is true; a light grip actually allows you to be more accurate. As you play around, occasionally check whether you’re gripping it too tightly. If your palm is touching the cue, it’s too tight. Let it rest on your fingers.

3. Play With New People

As fun as it is playing with your friends, you’ll learn more about yourself as a pool player by going against new people. You won’t be as relaxed, and that alone will test your skills. Furthermore, billiards, like any other sport, has a psychological element, and doing this will teach you how you read the other players.

4. Learn From the Masters

Finally, never discount the value of observation. You can learn so much from watching a professional game. Although you can do this online, it’s much more informative—not to mention fun—to visit a pool hall and see the action in person. Not only is it more enjoyable, but you can also move around and see things from other angles.
