Colored concrete is a beautiful and durable surface. With proper care, you can keep it that way for years to come. It doesn’t require much maintenance, but the small amount of maintenance it does require is essential. Make the most of your investment by knowing how to care for your concrete driveway, patio, or walkways.

A Maintenance Guide for Colored Concrete

1. Clean It

Sweeping periodically will remove most dirt, debris, and leaves. If there is more stubborn grime on the surface, use a mop with a minimal amount of water, and dry it immediately after you’ve finished cleaning. Never use a pressure washer or harsh chemicals, as these can break down the protective sealer coat.

2. Reseal It

The sealer protects the underlying concrete from threats such as water, spills, dirt, UV rays, and extreme temperature changes. It prevents cracks, staining, and color fading. Seal the surface after installation, then reseal once every 18 to 24 months. Apply two to three thin coats of sealer using a brush, and allow it to dry for three hours between coats.

3. Protect It

concreteAny harsh materials or impacts can damage the sealer. Don’t use salts or deicers on the concrete. If you must shovel snow or ice off the surface in the winter, use a plastic shovel rather than a metal one. If you have potted plants, raise them off the surface and place a drip tray underneath. This will catch the runoff water that carries acidic fertilizer, which would stain the concrete white.
