Mammograms are important imaging services used to detect abnormalities in the breast tissue. They are special types of X-rays that can detect signs of breast cancer early, when life-saving treatments are most likely to be effective. If you’re due for one of these scans, find out how you can prepare with the helpful tips below.

How to Get Ready for a Mammogram

1. Wear a Two-Piece Outfit

Choose separates instead of a dress or jumpsuit on the day of your appointment. This way, you’ll only be asked to remove your top and bra. Unless your technician indicates otherwise, you’ll be able to leave the rest of your clothing on.

2. Skip Heels & Jewelry

Because you may need to lean forward toward the machine to have the X-rays performed, heels could throw you off balance or make you uncomfortable. Wear flat shoes, and avoid any jewelry, which could be picked up on the images.

3. Know When to Schedule

mammogramMost women have their first mammogram at the age of 40 and then receive scans every two years. With that said, this may vary based on your doctor’s recommendations and your family history. Schedule your scan for the week after your period if you still menstruate to avoid any breast tenderness.

4. Bring Previous Images

If you’ve had one done in the past at a different center, bring your images with you on a disc. That will allow the radiologist to compare your past images with your new results to look for any changes.

5. Avoid Perfumed Products

Deodorants, lotions, and other scented body care products can often have metallic particles. These can show up on mammograms and create false results. Avoid applying creams, antiperspirants, and any other scented products to the areas near your breasts.
