If you’re unhappy with the look or function of your teeth, there are many different cosmetic and restorative treatments available to you. One of the most common solutions is a dental bridge. A bridge consists of one or more connected prosthetic teeth which are used to replace missing teeth. If you’re considering having a bridge put in, the following information can help you determine if you’re a good candidate and explain the available options.

What to Know About Dental Bridge Treatments

Reasons to Get a Dental Bridge

Dental bridges are often suggested when a tooth has been knocked out in an accident or extracted due to decay, damage, or an abscess. They serve to restore the beauty of your smile with natural-looking teeth replacements. Aside from their aesthetic benefits, bridges also help fix chewing, biting, and speaking problems that can arise when teeth are missing. Additionally, filling in an empty space with a prosthetic tooth is important for preventing the adjacent teeth from shifting and causing an issue with your alignment.

Types of Dental Bridges

bridgesThere are a few different types of dental bridges your dentist may discuss with you. A traditional bridge is secured to a dental crown that’s been placed over the surrounding teeth on each side of the gap. When a back tooth is missing, cantilever bridges are usually suggested. These are designed to attach to only one crown since there isn’t another tooth on the other side. Maryland bridges don’t attach to crowns but rather directly to the teeth on either side of the gap. These are frequently used for missing front teeth or when the natural teeth aren’t strong enough to be filed down to accommodate a crown. Implant-supported bridges, which are supported by dental implants instead of crowns, are another option.
