Soaring summer temperatures are hard on your air conditioning system—and a breakdown can create serious issues for your comfort and safety. However, if your air conditioning breaks down, don’t panic. Following these basic guidelines will help you stay cool while you wait for a repair team to arrive.

Do:

Call an HVAC contractor right away.

The sooner you call an HVAC contractor, the sooner you can get the air conditioning up and running again. It’s always better to call a professional rather than attempt repairs on your own. Even something that seems simple, like replacing the refrigerant, could result in further damage to the system if done improperly.

Use fans to stay cool.

air conditioningTo keep from overheating while waiting for repairs, turn on the ceiling fans and any box fans you may have around the house. Fans should spin counterclockwise to help circulate cool air and draw up hot air so you can stay cool.

Don’t:

Try to cool the house by opening the freezer.

Opening the freezer and refrigerator doors to cool the house is a common cliche in TV and movies, but it’s never a good idea. Not only is it ineffective, but it will overwork the freezer’s motor, potentially causing it to die. Exposing food to warmer air increases the likelihood of it going bad as well.

Use heat-generating appliances and electronics.

All appliances and electronics generate heat, so try to avoid using them as indoor temperatures rise. Along with not using the stove or oven, avoid running computers, washers, or dryers, as they generate heat as well. Wait to use these devices until repairs are completed.
