Practicing golf fundamentals on a driving range will improve your abilities, and once it’s time to show off your skills in a game, being courteous to fellow players will make time spent on the green more pleasant for everyone. Here are a few etiquette rules to follow and common behaviors to avoid.

Do:

Signal to players when balls are approaching.

Avoiding dangerous accidents should be your top priority during the game. When it’s your turn to tee up, make sure all players are a safe distance from the club when you take a swing. Once the ball becomes airborne, yell “fore” if other players are in the path. This will alert them to move to safety, preventing bumps, bruises, and additional injuries.

Let smaller and faster groups play through.

Depending on the skill level and the number of players in your group, you may spend a while playing each hole. A line of golfers waiting their turn will start to form behind your group. Let experienced golfers and smaller groups play through so that you don’t disrupt everyone else’s games. These types of groups will finish quickly, allowing you to resume your game with minimal downtime.

Don’t:

Be a know-it-all.

While waiting for your turn, you may analyze other players’ performance and form. Unless asked, don’t give golf pointers. Although well-intended, fellow players may be insulted by your unsolicited advice.

Step on another player’s line of play.

After the club makes contact with the ball, a player will watch as it sails across the air or rolls on the ground toward the hole. Don’t step in the line of its path until the ball comes to a complete stop. Although you may not alter the outcome of the stroke, it’s courteous to create as few disruptions as possible while a ball is in play.
