3 Tips for Preventing Shoulder Pain, Florence, Kentucky

The shoulder is a remarkably complex body part. It is comprised of a series of joints that link together several different muscles, tendons, and tissues. Because of this, it's not surprising that shoulder pain can often be intense and uncomfortable. You might feel a shooting pain radiate through the shoulder and spread into surrounding structures like the arm, back, and chest. To best prevent shoulder pain, follow these three tips.

How to Prevent Shoulder Pain

1. Practice Good Posture

shoulder painWhen a person slouches, they do not have the necessary support to hold the head upright. This puts stress on the neck, back, and shoulders. One way to combat this is to maintain good posture when sitting. Sit upright with both feet planted solidly and thighs parallel to the floor. Support the lower back and keep the shoulders relaxed. Check-in with yourself throughout the day. If your shoulders are moving upwards or bunching, lower them. If you're starting to slouch, make a conscious effort to straighten the spine.

2. Don't Strain When Reaching

Routinely overtaxing the shoulders when reaching will lead to strain and discomfort. Consider the layout of your kitchen, bathroom, and workspace. If there are a number of high shelves, cupboards, or cabinets that you need to access regularly, consider putting the most-needed items on lower shelves. If this isn't possible, invest in a grabber tool that can do the hard work of extending for you.

3. Use a Headset or Hands-free Device

Many people spend the bulk of their days on the phone at work, only to return home and answer calls on their mobile phones. Placing any model of a phone between the shoulder and the side of the face can cause neck and shoulder tension. Those whose jobs entail a large amount of telephone use should invest in a headset. People who frequently talk on their mobile phone should have a hands-free device. Both of these items ensure that the head and neck remain upright and the shoulders stay relaxed.
