To some, getting a strike in bowling can feel like a random stroke of luck. If you want your high score to be on purpose, learn the proper technique for a consistent game. Here are some pointers appropriate for bowlers both young and old.

How to Bowl Like a Pro at Any Age

1. Pick Comfortable Shoes

Bowling shoes should run about a half-size bigger than your usual shoe size. Even though rental shoes help grip the floor and keep bowlers balanced, don’t cross the lane’s foul line — it’s slippery and dangerous.

2. Use the Marks

Lanes are stamped with small triangle marks to help players aim the ball. Don’t align down the center arrow since this can lead to splits. Instead, if you’re right-handed, aim for the mark just to the right of the center. If you’re left-handed, prepare the throw over the mark to the left of the center. Upon releasing the ball, keep your eye on the marks, not the pins.

3. Aim for the Pocket Space

The “pocket space” is located between the front-and-center pin and the two pins directly behind it. This is the sweet spot to target if you’re aiming for a strike.

4. Time the Release

The ideal speed for a ball is 16 miles per hour. By releasing the ball at its lowest point — when it reaches the level of your ankle — you can minimize its dropping height, help the ball move faster, and knock over more pins.

5. Follow Through

When you release the ball, don’t drop your arm. Instead, continue the arc motion of the swing. Finish in the manner of a handshake.

bowling6. Choose the Right Ball

A high score starts with an appropriate ball. The optimum heft is 10% of your body weight, with holes that fit the fingers comfortably and snugly without getting stuck.

7. Adjust the Alley

If you’re playing with little ones or players with disabilities who can’t follow the technical tips, use props. Most bowling alleys offer a ramp to help line up the ball and give it the momentum to knock down the pins. Also, ask about bumpers, which block the gutters and keep the ball in the lane.

8. Try a Kid-Friendly Position

Another easy bowling position is “grandma style.” Spread your legs, squat, and use both hands to roll the ball away from the center of your body.
