Plumbing problems happen to everyone. As careful as you and your family members may be, items like a leaky faucet or slow drain are inevitable. In situations like these, you don’t necessarily need a plumber ASAP; you can book an appointment for later in the week. Unfortunately, these aren’t the only types of plumbing problems; there are some much more severe that merit immediate attention. If you encounter any of the following, don’t hesitate to call an emergency plumber

When to Call an Emergency Plumber

1. Flooding

Whether it’s in your basement, bathroom, or kitchen, whenever there’s flooding, it’s best to have a professional examine the plumbing. Even if it’s restricted to one room, it could be linked to a bigger issue; an emergency plumber will find the source of the problem to prevent any future water damage. As you wait, the best thing to do is turn off both the nearest and main water supply lines. Also, if it’s safe to do so, try to remove as much water as you can from the area.

2. Frozen Pipes

emergency plumberEven though it’s summer, anyone in a location that’s prone to freezing temperatures must be mindful of frozen pipes. If ignored too long, the water inside could expand and burst open the pipe. If it’s 32 ºF or colder and there are only a few drops of water coming out of the faucet, or nothing at all, then they're likely frozen. Any frost on the surface of the pipes is also an indicator. An emergency plumber will help you safely thaw the pipes as well as give you methods for preventing it from happening again. While waiting, turn off the main water supply line and keep your faucets open to relieve the pressure.

3. Damp Lawn

If it hasn’t been raining and you haven’t watered it, a wet lawn could indicate a problem with the water supply line. However, there's also a chance your sprinkler system is malfunctioning; to confirm, check the sprinklers themselves and do a test run of the system. If it’s functioning correctly, then you'll know it’s probably the waterline. Note, if you smell something rotten or sulfurous, it could be related to the sewer line instead. In this case, make sure the plumber you choose has experience with sewer systems.
