The energy it takes to drill, saw, or hammer other objects causes power tools to wear down. Regular cleaning and maintenance are necessary—not only to prevent dangerous malfunctions while using the equipment but to avoid the expensive repairs that follow breakdowns. For a better idea of the work involved in caring for certain tools, turn to the guide below.

What Power Tools Need Regular TLC?

1. Belt Sanders

To smooth and shape rough, wooden surfaces, you might use a belt sander. The electric motor turns drums attached to sandpaper. Routinely check the drums to make sure they are positioned properly. Otherwise, the sandpaper could slip while the components are rolling. You should also check the platen for nicks, bends, and dents. Located on the underside of the sander, the metal is backed by cork and acts as a shock absorber. Over time, the cork can wear down, causing too much friction when the metal makes contact with the belt.

2. Lawnmowers

power toolsYour lawnmower is a power tool that gets a lot of use throughout the year. To keep it functioning correctly, wipe away grass clippings and additional grime on the undercarriage after each mowing session. This will prevent debris from entering the discharge chute and causing damage. Remember to drain the gasoline at the end of each mowing season. Otherwise, during winter, the remaining fuel will become thicker and clog the carburetor. Rust could form as a result.

3. Chainsaws

Whether building a fence or pruning a tree, you’ll be able to cut through wood and other solid materials quickly with a chainsaw. Make sure the teeth and fuel cap vents are clean after each use. This will prevent debris from becoming airborne and causing injuries or forcing the power tool to work harder until it, eventually, stalls.
