While the algae responsible for turning above- and in-ground pool water green isn’t inherently dangerous, it looks unsightly and creates slippery, hazardous surfaces. The aquatic organisms making up algae blooms typically enter swimming spaces from the wind, rain or dirt, and even bathing suits. Here’s how to keep algae from taking over your above- or in-ground pool to enjoy clear water all summer long.

How to Prevent Algae in Above- or In-Ground Pools

1. Maintain Good Circulation

Prevent slow-moving if not stagnant water by maintaining your pool’s circulation system. Check the filter regularly to prevent the water from moving too slowly, and redirect the appliance, so it covers different areas of your pool, including the walls and floor. Also, consider installing an automatic cleaner to further promote healthy circulation.

2. Scrub & Vacuum Regularly

in-ground poolBrush your pool walls at least once a week to dislodge algae and other debris that create slippery surfaces. Use the right brush for your liner, such as a nylon brush for a fiberglass, vinyl, acrylic, or painted pool. Work with wire brushes for concrete or plaster walls. Follow every brushing with vacuuming to remove loosened particles and keep your above or in-ground pool water clear.

3. Shock Your Pool Every Week

Shock your pool every week to kill algae spores and keep up with the chlorine levels for a sanitized swimming space. Use the recommended dose of shock and check the chlorine level, so it is always between 2.0 and 4.0 parts per million. A floating chlorinator helps maintain the right level, as do salt chlorine generators if you have a saltwater pool.

4. Swim Often

Use your pool often, and encourage family and friends to do the same. Frequent use prevents debris from collecting on the walls and sides; instead, it gets stirred up for easy skimming. The filter also works better when you keep the water and any particles moving.
