Contact lenses are convenient, discreet solutions to common vision problems, and if you’re new to them, you’ll need to learn and practice proper care. Sticking to some essential tips will ensure you get the most from your lenses and avoid any complications. Here’s what you need to know about contacts.

Care Tips for Contact Lenses

1. Wash Your Hands

Any time you touch your lenses, wash your hands before doing so. If you don’t, bacteria and debris can transfer to them, turning them into a breeding ground and leading to irritation, eye infections, and even abrasions. Also, dry your hands before touching the lenses; tap water containing contaminants can transfer, too. Clean the lenses regularly and store them in an approved solution and container provided by your optician.

2. Have an Extra Case on Hand

Keep one in your car, bag, and work locker or desk. Clean the cases regularly, even if you aren’t using them. Contacts can be expensive to replace, and this ensures you’ll never have to toss them out prematurely.

3. Hydrate

Contact lenses can dry out if your eyes don’t create enough tears. This can lead to irritation, warping, and in some cases, the contact may migrate beyond your eyelid. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep eyes moist and use approved hydrating drops to re-wet the contacts. Consult with your eye doctor if you need a demonstration on how to use saline drops.
