Braces help align teeth to create a comfortable, more uniform smile—which is why, at any given time, they are worn by approximately four million Americans. However, they require unique care to keep clean and functional. The guide below offers advice to ensure you get the most benefit out of them.

Do:

Brush and floss thoroughly.

Because braces are affixed across the front surface of the teeth, bits of food and debris can get stuck behind them, leading to plaque buildup and cavities. Brush after every meal for a minimum of two minutes; spend at least 30 seconds brushing each quadrant of the mouth. Your dentist will give you a special brush that can fit between brackets. Flossing can be tricky with braces, but a floss threader, which is essentially a small plastic hoop, will help you guide the floss behind and between your braces.

Wear elastic bands as prescribed.

If your orthodontist has recommended plastic bands, wear them for the prescribed amount each day. These bands provide some additional corrective force to help better straighten the teeth. Keep extras with you at all times in case one, accidentally, snaps.

Don't:

bracesEat harmful foods.

Gum and hard or sticky candy can easily get stuck in braces. Not only are they especially difficult to remove, but they might also take some of your brackets with them. Crunchy foods like ice and popcorn can also cause damage to the metal.

Wait to see an orthodontist.

If you have concerns or questions about your braces, always consult an orthodontist. Even minor issues should be promptly addressed. Broken brackets are a common problem to be aware of. When the brackets are damaged, they are less able to hold the braces in place and less effective at straightening the teeth, meaning you may need to wear braces longer.
