Before you head out on vacation this summer, it’s crucial to take measures to protect your air conditioning system. Doing so will save you time and money, as well as protect you from indoor damage. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Maintain Your AC While You’re on Vacation

1. Adjust Your Thermostat

Avoid turning off the air conditioning unit while you’re away, as leaving it off will leave your home warm and damage heat-sensitive items like candles and artwork. Plus, air conditioners reduce humidity in the air, keeping moisture at bay and preventing mold or mildew growth.

Instead, adjust the indoor temperature up 7 to 10 degrees from where you normally keep it. Because the system only kicks on when the ambient air temperature reaches a set point, adjusting the temperature to a higher number can keep your system from turning on and off too often, saving power and reducing strain on the moving components of your air conditioner.

2. Replace the Air Filters

When indoor pollutants are present, they can become lodged in the air filters, making it difficult for your system to circulate properly. To avoid unnecessary strain on the air conditioning unit, replace the filters before heading out. HVAC air filters are usually placed either in the air handler in your furnace unit or main air intake vents.

3. Check the Weather

Before leaving, check the weather forecast for issues like heat waves or high humidity levels while you’re away. If you see that the temperature is projected to spike or drop off significantly, adjust your thermostat accordingly to ensure your home stays cool. If a heat wave is in the forecast, make sure all the windows and blinds are shut tightly to prevent heat-generating light from putting more strain on your air conditioner.
