When updating or replacing your door hardware, your locksmith will ask you questions. From knowing your measurements to being aware of your locking options, you should familiarize yourself with the terminology ahead of time. The better you communicate with your locksmith, the faster they can provide the security and style your property needs.

Common Door Hardware Terminology

1. Backset

Locksmiths drill a 2 1/8 inch bore hole to install door hardware like knobs, locks, or entry sets. The backset is the distance from the center of the bore hole to the edge of the door. Measure the distance ahead of time so your locksmith can install a properly fitting lock. When measuring the backset, note that there are two common sizes for residential doors: 2 3/8 inches and 2 3/4 inches.

2. Strike Plate

Door hardwareThis piece of door hardware is often overlooked as decorative. Instead, they provide an extra layer of security. When a door is closed and locked, the bolt enters the metal strike plate, holding the door closed. The strike plate protects the doorjamb from friction and reinforces jambs made from softer materials.

3. Handing

Make sure your new lock is compatible with your door by knowing the direction of your handing. Stand outside the door. If the hinges are on the left, you have a left-handed door. If the hinges are on the right, it’s a right-handed door.

4. Cylinder

The cylinder is the mechanism in the door lock. It houses the keyway, which activates the lock when a key is inserted. Locksmiths can easily replace cylinders for security purposes.

5. Keying

Keying is an option for your locks. You decide how the cylinder in the lock is keyed. Keying your cylinders alike will make all the locks openable by a single key. Keying differently means that each cylinder will need a unique key to be unlocked. Master keyed systems will allow for a single key to open all the locks despite having unique keys. This door hardware is often used in businesses. They provide supervisory employees easy access to many areas or offices.
