One of the main reasons patients seek chiropractic treatment or help from doctors is neck pain. There are many potential causes behind this type of discomfort — some easy to address and some more severe. If you suffer from recurring pain, some simple lifestyle changes may be all you need for relief. Here’s what you need to know.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain is not a specific diagnosis, and there’s a wide range of potential issues underlying it. One possibility is tired and strained muscles. Some may experience arthritis in the spine. Neck, shoulder, and jaw injuries are also a common source of pain.

How Can You Prevent It?

Neck PainPosture Changes

One of the most common factors underlying muscle soreness in the neck is poor posture. Many people today sit with their shoulders slumped or their heads craned forward, putting extra strain on their neck muscles and joints. To relieve this type of pain, develop a habit of sitting up straight. A more supportive and ergonomic chair can help, as can moving the computer monitor so that it's easier to see without leaning in. Also, ensure you aren't supporting your slim smartphone with your shoulder when you call; instead, hold it with your hand or invest in a hands-free headset.

Sleeping Positions

When you lie down to sleep, your body may maintain the same position all night. If it's a position that's bad for your neck and back, you'll wake up sore. Use a soft, supportive mattress and a pillow that’s thick enough for your needs. Consider adding a small neck pillow. Try sleeping on your back with your knees elevated to straighten the spine or on your side with a pillow between your knees.
