From real-world experiences to learning through sight, sound, and touch, field trips get children out of their classrooms and create invaluable memories. However, in addition to educating students on trips, it’s important to keep them safe. If your group will be traveling on a charter bus, there are a few safety measures you should take. Here’s what you need to know.

Charter Bus Safety Tips

1. Keep Their Limbs Inside the Bus

It’s tempting for kids to stick their head, arms, or hands outside the window, but it isn’t safe. While sideswipe injuries aren’t that common, they do occur. These injuries are the result of traveling with a body part outside of the window and coming into contact with other vehicles, road signs, or trees. Kids may also be tempted to hold toys or other items outside of the bus, which poses the risk of dropping them on the roadway, leading to an accident. Keep the windows closed to prevent this temptation, and make it clear that they should keep their body parts in the bus.

2. Avoid Distracting the Driver

Charter BusThe bus driver has an important job to do. They have a responsibility to the people on board to stay focused on the road and ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely. To keep the kids entertained, plan some activities for the trip to keep them in their seats. Depending on their age and the length of the trip, you can also bring coloring books or portable board games along. Older kids will enjoy electronic devices to watch their favorite shows or play games; however, remind them to keep the volume down.

3. Keep Them in Their Seats

Depending on the length of the trip, children may need to use the bus’s bathroom or stretch their legs. However, they should stay in their seats the majority of the time and never run around. For simplicity and to cut down on multiple children walking through the aisle at once, have them ask permission before leaving their seats.
