Driveways made of asphalt are affordable and durable, and can last for decades with proper care. However, they may get damaged from the elements and certain habits. Using sealcoating to cover cracks and understanding some of these sources of damage will help you protect the surface. Here are a few preventive steps you can take to keep paved areas aesthetically appealing and functional.

3 Ways to Protect Your Asphalt Driveway

1. Landscape Appropriately

Weed roots can grow under the driveway and sprout up through small cracks. This will reduce the aesthetic appeal of the surface and may worsen existing damage. Prevent issues by keeping a few inches between your driveway and vegetation, including your lawn. Trim back your grass to reduce encroachment and avoid planting trees and plants around the paved area.

2. Keep the Asphalt Clean

AsphaltNot only is dirt on a driveway unsightly, but it can also cause damage. In the hotter months, dirt absorbs the natural oils from asphalt, leaving it dry and prone to cracks. Motor vehicle oil, rock salt, and anti-freeze are also corrosive to driveways, since sodium absorbs moisture. To prevent issues, power wash the surface when it starts appearing discolored with dirt. If you need to de-ice the surface, use magnesium chloride, which won’t damage asphalt.

3. Avoid Metal Objects

Metal objects like bike kickstands, car jacks, and studded tires apply centralized pressure that can leave dents on driveways with repeated use. This gives water access to the substrate, the granular layer under the surface of the asphalt, which causes weakness and eventually potholes. Avoid using metal shovels on driveways to remove debris, dirt, or snow. Instead, opt for plastic tools to prevent damage.
