Losing a spouse can be one of the most devastating experiences of a person’s life. During the grieving process, you may encounter many powerful feelings such as pain, sorrow, guilt, and even anger. It’s important to know you are not alone. Though there is not a universal standard for grieving, here are four ways to aid in your healing after the loss of a spouse.

How to Heal After the Loss of a Spouse

1. Take Care of Yourself

It’s easy to forget to take care of yourself while grieving. Between the funeral, paperwork, and focusing on honoring your loved one, you may feel too overwhelmed to look after yourself. Don’t overload yourself during this time, and try to make sure that you take care of your basic needs. This includes regulating your diet, your sleep, and exercise. If you find yourself struggling to do even the simplest of tasks, such as brushing your teeth or getting dressed, talk to your doctor or someone you trust for support.

2. Reach Out to Others

grievingHaving a good support system can be a tremendous help during the grieving process. Talk to friends and family and chat about the good memories. This will build you up and provide people who will listen to you. If you’re having a hard time, reaching out to others to assist with your everyday errands and tasks is completely understandable and can offer relief.

3. Postpone Important Decisions

During the grieving process, you may have trouble thinking clearly. This is not the best time to make important decisions, such as moving or quitting your job. Take your time, and come back to these issues once you’ve had the chance to heal and you’re feeling better.

4. Seek Grief Counseling

Grief counselors can offer a kind of comfort that allows you to heal by working through the pain you’re experiencing. They offer specialized support and resources that teach you how to manage your grief. This can lead to gradual healing. Counselors can also help you find a support group to join. It may help to be a part of a group that knows how you feel and offers encouragement. If you are struggling, grief counseling may be a key to your healing.
