The Differences Between Crawfish & Shrimp, Bon Secour, Alabama

When browsing your options at the local seafood market, you might be curious about the differences between fresh fish that belong to the same family. Among the most easily confused are crawfish and shrimp. Both belong to the crustacean family but differ dramatically. Here’s what you should know.

What Is Crawfish?

shrimpIt’s not unusual for those unfamiliar to confuse a crawfish with a lobster. Both feature the same large, distinctive front claws that make them stand out to passersby. But, unlike lobsters, crawfish live primarily in freshwater environments. They measure roughly three to four inches long in size and are easy to detect thanks to their bold orange, red, or deep green hue. You might also spot white or black crawfish on occasion. There are at least 500 different varieties of this fresh fish, which is also known as the crayfish. They tend to be the busiest during the overnight hours when they crawl along the thick ocean floor in search of sustenance and reside beneath rocks at the bottom of the sea. They’re a healthy addition to any diet thanks to their high protein content and low fat and calorie counts.

What Is Shrimp?

Shrimp, by comparison, live largely in saltwater environments. They measure approximately eight inches in length and are usually pink, white, or brown. Unlike crawfish, shrimp lack eye-catching front claws. Instead, they boast long, noticeable tails. There are approximately 1900 types of shrimp in the world, and most of them are found residing in both muddy and sandy environments. Thanks to their lean bodies and strong abdomens, they can maneuver quickly through the water. Unlike crawfish that feed at night, shrimp simply clean the parasites and fungi from fish. Much like crawfish, however, they’re also low in fat and calories and provide an excellent source of protein.
