Although the summer sun creates a relaxing atmosphere, homeowners should still try to save as much energy as possible during the season. Fortunately, there are ways to embrace the rays while still being energy-efficient. Here are some electrician-approved tips that will help reduce your energy usage.

4 Tips for Saving Energy During the Summer

1. Open Windows

Saving energy during the summer involves reducing the workload of your air conditioning system as much as possible, in which case you should use the windows to your advantage. Open them during early morning hours and later evening hours to let in the cool air.

2. Cool & Circulate With Fans

electricianEven with the AC blasting away, ceiling fans are beneficial for keeping your home cool. Running the fans counterclockwise will push cool air down and let you set the thermostat around 4 degrees warmer while still staying comfortable. But because the cooling effect only works on people, turn the fans off when you leave to save energy.

Similarly, running bathroom exhaust fans while taking a shower or bath will help keep humidity levels down. But don’t turn the fan off right when you finish. It should run for around 30 minutes to dissipate as much heat and moisture as possible.

3. Use a Programmable Thermostat

To use the AC system more efficiently, invest in a programmable thermostat. The device can set a warmer temperature when no one is home and automatically cool down before you arrive. Also, a gradual cooling is more effective than setting the AC to a frigid temperature: it’s easier on the system, uses less energy, and reduces the need for costly repairs.

4. Install Efficient Lighting

If letting the daylight in doesn’t warm up your home too much, using natural illumination instead of interior fixtures will cut back on electricity. To increase efficiency when you do flip a light switch, bring in an electrician to install Energy Star®-certified lighting.
