An Introduction to Drywall Water Damage, Fort Worth, Texas

If a pipe bursts in your basement or local floodwaters sneak indoors, the drywall throughout your home is at risk of getting wet. Unfortunately, your walls and ceilings are integral parts of your home’s structure and aesthetic beauty, and you’ll need to protect them from the consequences of water damage. If you want to learn more about repairing wet drywall, take a look at the guide below.

What Happens if Drywall Gets Wet?

While the material is durable, an excessive amount of water will leave the material soggy for too long. If it can’t dry out soon enough, drywall’s structural integrity will be compromised. When waterlogged, this usually rigid material will become soft, spongy, and weak. If the moisture sticks around, it can also lead to mold growth, which will spread throughout the porous material and warrant its replacement.

How Do You Dry It Out?

drywallIf the water damage is minimal, it may have just discolored your wall, like when a towel gets wet. After a few days of keeping the area ventilated, it should dry out, and you can paint over any leftover stain. However, if the damaged drywall is on your ceiling, the process won’t be so easy. The horizontal nature of this surface will cause the water to pool on top, leading to brown-edged, peeling blisters.

To speed up the drying process, some contractors will pierce the area with a tool and twist it, creating a small opening for the liquid to drain. This small hole will need to be patched and repainted, but this form of damage is far less costly to repair than the alternative—a moldy, waterlogged ceiling.
