The roofing system is vital to any home, as it’s responsible for protecting it from the elements and keeping it insulated. However, many homeowners don’t fully understand how the system works. As you work with your roofing contractor to maintain your roof, here’s what you need to know.

What Are the Various Components of a Roofing System?

1. Decking

The decking is laid over the roof structure. It closes off the structure, reinforces it, and provides a nail bed for the singles to attach to. It’s typically made from thick plywood.

2. Flashings

They create seals around the openings to keep water out. They are made from aluminum, plastic, or galvanized steel and may be either flexible or rigid.

3. Shingles

The shingles are what you see when you look at a roof from the ground. They are laid securely overlaying each other to create a water-tight barrier. They protect the roof from precipitation, insects, and other threats. They are often made of fiberglass, asphalt, slate, or metal.

4. Drip Edge

A roofing contractor installs this metal flashing at the edge of the roof; it hangs slightly over the shingles. This waterproof barrier directs water away from the fascia, preventing moisture from running down the underlying roofing components and damaging them.

5.  Fascia

This is a vertical board that runs around the edge of the roof. Its function is to prevent water damage. It is often made of the same material as the siding, creating a cohesive look that improves your property’s aesthetic appeal. The gutters may be attached to it.
