Swimming is a fun way to spend a summer day, but the pool needs to be safe for all users. States create guidelines for both public and residential facilities to help protect swimmers and visitors. From working with a fence contractor to putting up proper signs, here are some of the most important steps to keep in mind this season.

Residential Pools

Put Up Fencing

According to Kentucky law, all pools more than 24 inches deep must be surrounded by a fence that’s at least 4 feet high with an outward-opening, self-closing gate. The latch needs to be at least 3 inches below the top of the gate with no more than a half-inch opening between the door and the edge of the fence. There are different allowances for openings within the material depending on the style your fence contractor installs. For example, upright fences should have no more than 1 ¾ inches between the slats, while lattice or chain link fences can only have a maximum of 2 ¼ inch mesh openings.

Use a Cover

While nothing replaces adult supervision, a sturdy cover provides an effective barrier between your loved ones and the water. Look for an automatic cover that meets ASTM F 1346 standards for surface coverage, drainage, and weight support.

Public Pools

In addition to following the fencing rules that apply to residential pools, Kentucky law requires public pools to post signs explaining the facility’s rules, such as not swimming alone, not entering the pool if you have infectious diseases, and not diving in shallow water. Signs should also display numbers for the local fire department or emergency services. State law also requires signage to deter people from entering or swimming when there is no lifeguard on duty.
